Markets don't move at a constant pace through the day. Volatility and volume are heavily concentrated in the first part of the session and, to a lesser degree, the last — a pattern often described as U-shaped. The Opening Reversal Trade Scanner exists because of that pattern, not despite it.

Why the open is different

By the time the market opens, information has been accumulating since the previous close — overnight news, earnings releases, moves in other markets, anything that happened while US equity trading was shut. The open is where the broadest set of participants processes all of that at once and arrives at a new price. That concentrated activity is what produces the outsized volume and volatility of the first 30 minutes compared to a typical stretch of mid-afternoon trading.

What “setting the tone” means, and doesn't

The early move often establishes the range and rough direction the rest of the session trades around — but not always, and not reliably enough to assume it in advance. Some opens fade completely by 10 a.m. The Opening Reversal Trade Scanner's job isn't to predict whether the early move holds; it's to flag, as fast as possible, where that early move is largest relative to what's normal for that specific stock. What the move turns into after that is exactly what the rest of your morning workflow is for.

Key takeaway: the first 30 minutes carry disproportionate information because disproportionate activity happens there — not because the direction it sets is guaranteed to last.
